Vanda cristata, also known as the Himalayan Vanda, is a unique and elegant orchid species native to the cool, high-altitude regions of the Himalayas. Unlike many tropical Vandas, this species is well-suited to intermediate and cooler climates, making it an excellent choice for growers who don’t have hot conditions year-round.
The plant produces upright to slightly arching flower spikes bearing 5–7 star-shaped flowers. The blossoms are typically greenish-yellow to bright chartreuse with a distinctive, fringed lip in white or pale yellow, and they often carry a sweet fragrance.
Vanda cristata prefers bright, filtered light, high humidity, and excellent air circulation. While it can be grown in baskets with chunky orchid media, it also does well mounted if humidity is maintained. Consistent watering is needed during the growing season, with slightly reduced watering in winter.
